why RJL works
What is Physical Literacy?
Physical Literacy is the mastering of fundamental movement skills (categorized into locomotor, object control and balance) that permit a child to interact with their environment, allowing them to move confidently and with control in a wide range of physical activity situations (Canadian Sport for Life).
It includes the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life (International Physical Literacy Association).
Run.Jump.LEAD! follows the Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD) framework within the Canadian Sport for Life model. LTAD uses a holistic approach to providing positive experiences for children, combining physical, mental, cognitive and emotional development. It is imperative that physical activity programs are built for the specific needs of girls in order to gain the physical and psychological benefits that staying active offers.
Why does Physical Literacy matter?
Physical literacy is the foundation of sport and should be developed in the same way that children learn to read and write. Developing Physical Literacy early in life provides later success in the life-long participation of physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
For example, mastering the fundamental movement skills of running, leaping, throwing and landing leads to the successful performance of a basketball lay-up. Lateral hopping, dribbling, kicking, striking and stopping are the broken down fundamental skills of a soccer pass and shot on net.
It has been proven that physically literate girls and women engage in sport and physical activity more willingly and with confidence.
